The story centers around a man named Jean Valjean, who was imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread for a hungry child of his sister. After being released inspired by a merciful act of a bishop, he decided to start a new and upright life. But, he is continuously followed by a police inspector named Javert, who is blinded to the honorable nature of Valjean.

Along with some of the other characters including Cosette, Valjean’s adopted daughter and a student Marius, who Cosette eventually marries, Valjean faces the turmoil upheaved by the French Revolution. The story witnesses a lot of death along the way but restoration also takes place.

Through the story entails the more or so social injustice found nearly every corner of the world it wasn’t received much enthusiastically as it should have been. Many critics lashed at it with disapproving comments, calling it a downright boring story. But after the Broadway production in 1987, it has won the love of the audience and that increase the amount to 130 million people who have watched the show.

The story was first adapted into a musical and premiered in French during 1980 in Paris.
