A carburetor is a device that allows the mixture of air and fuel in proper quantity for the combustion in internal combustion engine. There are three major types of carburetor such as natural or side draft, updraft and downdraft. Natural draft carburetor is used where there is less space on top of the engine. In this type of a carburetor, the air moves horizontally into the intake manifold. Updraft carburetor is placed lower to the engine, which uses a gravity fed fuel supply.

In such a carburetor, the fuel tank is above the carburetor, where the fuel falls in the carburetor from the fuel tank and the air-fuel mixture is forced upward into the engine. Downdraft carburetors operates with larger passages and low air velocities. This is so because gravity assists the flow of air-fuel mixture to the cylinder. In addition, downdraft carburetors can provide large volume of fuel when required for high power output and greater speed.

One barrel, single stage two barrel, two stage two barrel and four barrel are the four different segments under the number of barrels used. One barrel has a single outlet, through which all the systems feed into the intake manifold. Such carburetors are used in 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Single stage two barrel has two throttles and two barrels that operate together.

The two throttles are put together on the same shaft, which operate together. The two barrels use common float, acceleration pump, power system and choke. Single stage two barrels are used in 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
